| no partners | | My original plan for today was to camp overnight near the trailhead, then hike Humphreys from the Inner Basin. Yesterday afternoon, there was a 20% chance of storms for today. I found a nice place to park, had dinner, watched a great sunset, then lightning show, and even did some stargazing after the storm passed--lots of my favorite things all rolled into one evening!
When I checked the weather at 3:30 this morning, the storm chance was up to 60% by 10:00am. Hmmmm, I wasn't really thrilled about that. Rather than risk it (especially since I'll be back here in Sept), I decided to switch to something less exposed. So I got one more hour of sleep, then headed over to the trailhead for Bear Jaw/Abineau. I got started a little before 6:00 am, and decided to head up Bear Jaw, as it seemed to be a more gradual climb. I huffed and puffed my way up the trail--which had great scenery--and got to Waterline in about 80 minutes. Waterline, obviously, was very easy, and I made great time on that.
Heading down Abineau was definitely my favorite part of the loop. The best scenery/vegetation of the day, and the views to the north, and even towards Humphreys, were great. The top 1/2 mile of Abineau is quite steep, I skidded on rocks a few times, and was grateful to have poles with me. The trail got a little better after that, and I enjoyed the rest of the descent. I'm not sure if I would prefer hiking up or down Abineau. Only saw three people today--all on Abineau. Once back to the car, I had a snack, then made the drive back to Phx. Both directions, I took Hwy 87/Lake Mary Rd/Hwy 89 as part of my continued dislike of I-17. |
