Dragged 9L out on another off trail exploration to satisfy my own curiosity.
The Hogan Trail isn't really a trail, my favorite, and I plan on completing the route asap.

It was a quick jaunt down BA where we slid offtrail, found a huge mule skeleton and started our scramble to the North along the base of the Coconino.

There are a few drainages to clamber down and over and through, one included a HUGE heap of Coconino boulders that I insisted on climbing through....yeah, that was fun, I'll definitely go that way again!!

Due to our late start and my seemingly inherent laziness I suggested we turn back early. The scramble back was much more fun! :D I can't wait to try it all again and finally get to the mine, just gotta find time!

On the way back up BA I stopped at Kolb Seep and stared at a "trail" that a NPS friend of mine had mentioned earlier that day....oh why the heck not! I lead the way through the tangle of trees and bushes and we found a sweet overlook, further up the side of the toroweap formation, just below the "Diving Board" (which is an obvious landmark below Lookout Studio) I spotted a memorial of some sort...a laminated photo of an older man, on the back were very sweet words of love and mourning. :(

The words read:
"My darling Dani(?)
Two years ago we were to make this your "dream trip" together. God secured/rescued(?) you into heaven instead. I stand here today knowing we are taking in this beautiful site through the same eyes. You from above me here with an emptiness in my heart. I love and miss you with my whole being.
Together forever...
Your Wife"

We guess that the husband passed away before they could make this "dream trip" so when she was able the loving wife traveled to the Grand Canyon, stood at the lower balcony of Lookout Studio and after clasping the photo to her breast and whispering her love to it she let it fly from her hands out into the Canyon only to land somewhere below in the ravine into which 9L and I and countless other before us have wandered.

The photo was probably found stuck in a tree and the finder carefully nestled it against a rock, at the base of the cliff, beneath a tree to protect it from the sun. And for months and years after others like us have found it and kept it's legacy alive as a "memorial to a loved one" as my NPS friend referred to it to me...

If only the loving Wife knew that even though we don't know who they are, they both are still alive and well in the millions of Canyon memories that lie hidden in wait beneath the Rim. :budrose:
