| no partners | | Starting at the Crosscut trailhead on First Water Road, I hiked over to Lost Dutchman State Park and took the Treasure Loop up to Praying Hands. I crossed over the ridge and headed toward Massacre Falls. There's an easy to see use trail that runs high along the ridge. This will take you to the first main drainage, at which point, the trail disappears and you're on your own to cross. If you're lucky enough to end up in the right place on the other side, you should be able to see some cairns. This area is tall, dense brush, but if you can spot these ahead of you, the going will be a little easier. But, be advised: The cairns I was following did not go to Massacre Falls. They went in the right direction most of the way, but just short of the Falls and another drainage, they turned right and went up to the top of the ridge. I headed back down looking for a way to cross and trying to spot the Massacre Trail, but I was tired, it was late and I had a long hike back. I had also lost a little of my enthusiasm just before that point. Halfway between the two drainages, I suddenly discovered that I was trespassing in cougar territory. This area was aggressively marked and there was plenty of cover for a cat. I have to admit, as a lone hiker, this dampened my spirits enough to turn around and head back to civilization.
It was a cold, gray day and I didn't take many photos. All the ones I posted were taken of that section between Praying Hands and Massacre Falls. I've also posted a map of the 'danger zone' that you may wish to avoid or, at least use caution in that vicinity.
I was scanning the forums to see if anyone else had reported this. See posts under "Fauna" / "Cat Calls". |
