This was my first time in the area and its pretty cool. I parked ta the Wild Burro TH and did the Tortolita super-loop. The un-official trail section was easy to follow once you find the turn-off. I missed it and went up the dirt road a bit before backtracking.
At the Wild Burro tank I saw the only people of the day. There’s was three ladies finishing a loop and a mountain biker. This is where I did a side trip. I used HAZ’s route manger to see where this 4x4 road lead to. I created a route to the Upper Sahuarita Dam. I’m glad I had the route, there's a maze of road/trails out in this area and a lot of them are not on the GPS. I did some shortcutting across the desert and made it to the dam. The dam is curious this. It’s facing the wrong direction. And I don’t see the how it could hold water, the dam looks like was designed to hold water from a flowing up.
I returned to the loop and really liked the Tortolita Ridgeline trail. This trail is well contracted and has awesome views.
This was a really fun hike. The weather was warm, but there was cloud coverage for a good part of the day. It got too warm when the sun poked out.
I’ll be back to explore some more. |
