Encountered only a small handful of hikers, bikers and joggers. We took the long way: veering east off the Hawk's Nest Trail to the Desert Tortoise, then north on the Valle Verde to the Dixie Mountain Loop and up to the summit. The Valle Verde, which is not described on HAZ as far as I know, is basically a lowland connector trail, the quickest route between Dixie Mountain and Union Peak to the southeast.
On Dixie's summit, I discovered the triangulation disk I missed earlier in the month. It was right on the summit by a small cairn. The reference mark disk is about 20 yards away to the NW.
Also on the summit, I found a register in plastic container. It was damp and moldy but still legible. And it gave an indication of the precise date the summit trail was completed. The earliest notation in the book was April 16, 2010. "OTC Trail Const / Going to be a lot easier to get to this little book now." [Signed] TH, MA and (something) R." OTC, I believe, stands for Okanogan Trail Construction, the trail's builder. |
