| no partners | | | Started from the VC about 1430 and walked counter-clockwise, coming up to the summit from the north. The wind sock showed a moderate southerly breeze. Couldn't believe I was looking for shade to eat lunch here in mid-February. Found a cool spot by a palo verde on the S. Views stifled by haze in all directions. Kept company by a chipmunk who wanted to get into my backpack. Intended to return on the S route but halfway to Cloud Nine, I realized I'd left my camera on top, so retreated back up and found it where I layed it, partly hidden behind a mound of basalt. Hacked at myself, I returned to VC the way I came up, lengthening the trip by squaring off the route through the inner basin. I wanted to hit 5 mi. That's why the miles and AEG are unusual. |

Wildflowers Observation Moderate
Saw nothing until about halfway up to the summit on the north. Lots of fiddleneck in bloom, some phacelia and golden poppies and a smattering of lupine. Haven't seen lily yet this year. |
