Northbound: Center Dr to Imax We drove up in the AM so only had time for a short hike before heading off to join arizonahikers.com for dinner at Grandview Tower campground. I tried to set it up so we wouldn't be too far from this part of 37 from our drop off point. The shuttle wasn't running so we had to get a cab to take us from the hotel. I used the HAZ route manager to figure out the approximate miles and the point where we would need to exit to get back to the hotel.

We started hiking from Center Drive across 64 to catch the 37 and headed south. It's not what you would call pretty thru here but there are sections of this that are what you would expect a hike thru the pines to be like.

Fortunately in 20 minutes we would run into a gal out on a walk with her dog who told us about a condor out on snag just up the trail a bit. Ambika spotted it so we made our way toward the snag. Ambika was practically underneath where the condor was resting and it stayed there the whole time. So I got movies and pictures that will get a low rating for "action". But I think it's pretty cool to see a condor in this area :D .

15 minutes later we were back on the trail which is really just a road. 10 minutes later we saw a Horned Lizard and got some pictures of it. For the rest of the hike we would got some pics of a couple wildflowers but that was pretty much it. I took 58 pics of which 36 were of the condor. The trail does get a bit confusing from time to time :-k so the main thing is to watch for the AZT trail signs. If you don't see a trail, you pretty much stay on the road.

When we did have to cross back over 64, we did run into 2 thru-hikers at an intersection where we were looking for the trail and they said it's road the rest of the way into Tusayan. Well not quite as you do have to cross under 64 and go way east :oplz: for awhile before coming back toward 64 and Tusayan. We ended up at the RV Park across from the IMAX and hiked to the parking lot area where our room was.

Yep, nothing like hiking part of the AZT right into your hotel room. TOMORROW: 14.5 miles from Grandview to here. We rested our laurels before heading over to join the arizonahikers.com participants for dinner at the campsite near Grandview Lookout Tower.

We met up with the group, shared Hors d'oeuvres, had dinner and chatted around the fire. Once it started getting chilly, we decided to head out to the Village to see if we could meet up with some HAZers. We got ahold of Hippy who told us they were at Maswick. Fortunately Ambika is familiar with the area so we were able to drive right there. It was good to see everyone  (Haley, Nikko, Todd, John, Bob and John). Didn't realize it was Todd's birthday the nite before so Happy Belated! We visited for about 1/2 hr before breaking up the short party as most of us had hiking plans the next day.

Video of the condor and lizard (condor & lizard didn't do much though): [ youtube video ] ...

Oh, and once in awhile, don't forget to look back at the trail you've traveled.
