| | | Met up with the Valley folks at Whole Foods (gotta meet somewhere else in the future as when we got back, I went into the store to get dinner and walked out with 3 bottles of wine and lots of sushi). Richard drove us and Flat Denny up in the Mazziemobile. We filled the back of it with food and beverages... oh and our hiking packs.
We took Walker Road in which goes rather quickly as you don't have to go thru Prescott, a real bonus! We met Cindy and Bobby at the trailhead and headed up the rocky road. Two times Bob told us about this cool route we could take instead of the road. I figure since he brot it up twice in 5 minutes, it was really more of a rhetorical suggestion ...so thot, "why not". Well I've never route hiked with Bob before; RICHARD on the other hand ...has route hiked with Bob...
The route started off and stayed pretty good for most of the way. Our tour director would talk about interesting points along the way... until we couldn't see the way . Before that we saw a filled-in adit, hiked thru claret cup alley, saw the shot put and started to enjoy the views from a far as we hiked higher and higher... until we couldn't see the views as we ended up off the route and in the brush... DEEP in the brush. Fortunately this didn't last long and despite some scrapes and scratches; we made it to a clearing.
Everyone caught their breath as we still had to get up to the top yet. Before long we were standing below the tower asking for permission to come up. John, the tower person, was not amused by Flat Denny so he didn't get to go . The three girls went up first as we didn't want to overwhelm the tower; probably would have been better if we had though. We had the strangest conversation with the tower guy. Once back on the ground, we hung out for a bit before making our way to Mount Davis. Fortunately, we didn't have to go all the way back down which I initially thot we would do.
On the way over to Davis, we ran into Prescottstyle and his companions. I initially thot it was some stranger Bob was conversing with and then it dawned on me as they started autograhing Flat Denny. From there it was to the saddle, up the trail for a piece before heading up the south side of Davis. Bob went his usual direction (not sure where that was ) but no one followed this time. I decided to follow Bobby as he had the GPS and sure seems like he knows what he is doing. This was a good plan as you have to cross over a barbed-wire fence and he found the PERFECT spot.
As we are nearing the crest, a Yeti approached. I think I made some introductions to the folks that were traveling with us (some were ahead) before we all eventually made it to the Nipple as technically we hiked past the actual Davis summit. The views were quite nice and lucky for us Preston was there to point out the various landmarks and ranges in the area. We had a nice break and then headed back down the mountain.
We passed by a watered-in adit and then basically followed the route down the south side of Davis. Oh, Richard had stopped to sign in for us at Mount Davis. From there we were on our merry way to the saddle and down the rocky trail. Preston had mentioned an arrastra and since I didn't know what that was, he made a point to look for it as we neared the bottom. We saw a clearing and then Richard spotted the arrastra.
Next it was "dog" and "beer" time. What a treat! We all got to just sit back, eat, drink and be merry for awhile. That was so nice as well as just visiting and enjoying the nice temps. Yep, this was a great outing .
Nice meeting everybody!!!! new and old acquaintances. It was a pleasure. Bob for putting this together and to Richard for driving. I'll post lots of pics soon.

For me, sometimes it's just as much about the journey as the destination.
Oh, and once in awhile, don't forget to look back at the trail you've traveled. |
