9L offered me a place to crash Friday night, which certainly helped logistically. Met Boots at John's door around 6:30 and we all made a beeline in John's "highway" jeep towards Payson.
I don't do much hiking in this area and was surprised by the number of trails and opportunities around Payson. Our weather was just about perfect with the sun hiding behind clouds most of the day and a very slight drizzle on our return trip. With the higher temps, the bottom of the canyon/creek was VERY humid.
At the top of the switches, we took a lunch break and after a yummy almond-snickers and water check, I wandered alone to the top trailhead about 1/4 mile more just so see and fully complete Trial #26.
Our return trip was very quick, we stopped at the "Tiny Cave" in the creek area - LOL (It was tiny). John and Kyle's original HAZ GPS route bypassed a new set of "stoopid switchbacks" located just above the boy scout camp. It's highly recommended to avoid this area unless you are traveling by wheelchair.
I had only taken my 100oz bladder and had run dry about a mile or so from the Jeep. The warm orange Gatorade I kept under John's passenger seat was still refreshing!!!
Afterwards, we found a Mexican joint (tasty enough) in Payson where the ONLY waiter had some real trouble keeping up with the masses that followed us in... |
