This is just about the most scenic place I've paddled in Arizona. However, it is significantly marred during the first mile or so by graffiti on the Coconino sandstone cliffs, and trash in the water. In my opinion the City of Winslow could be doing more to foster community service cleanups of the area, and to try to educate the public. They should come up with a way to remove the graffiti as quickly as it is painted, and to pick up the trash in the water, using volunteers. The city does not charge a fee to use the lake or to camp in the campground. Perhaps a fee to camp would help offset the cost of cleanup and education programs, and to train volunteers.

The other problem with kayaking up this otherwise sublime canyon is the fact that jetskis are allowed, creating a real danger for swimmers and kayakers alike. The canyon is very narrow and twisty. It is astonishing to me that the jetskis are allowed. I can see allowing fishermen with low-power motors, but not these things that can go over 60 mph. A tragedy waiting to happen. I did see a couple of these things, and thankfully their young operators were polite enough to slow down very significantly when they saw me. However, a swimmer in the water could be hidden from view and be run over.

Perhaps, if jetskis are going to be allowed, they could institute days on and days off, the way they do at many other lakes where non-motorized boats and electric trolling motorboats are used. Let's say Saturday for the jetskiers, and Sunday for quieter recreation, with weekdays divided up as well.

All that being said, I will go back again. Next time I'll be prepared to hike up the canyon after I get up to where the creek comes into it. I'll go early in the morning on a weekday, thereby avoiding some of the crowds. After school starts there should be an improvement on weekdays as well.

One of the best photos I've ever taken was here, but not in the canyon area, but down in the lake area near the dam. I call it "Floating on the Clouds." Check it out! It's the last photo.
