Having grown up in Flagstaff, my perceptions of Winslow were that it was a train stop where we went on a our 2nd grade field trip and where a few softball/baseball tournament were held--and not much else.
The second verse of a popular Eagles song notwithstanding, I'm pretty sure the most popular thing in Winslow is Clear Creek Reservoir.
To the non-locals, this is a bit of hidden gem. We arrived mid-afternoon, and locals were out in force, enjoying the best thing in town.
It was a good mile paddle upstream before we left the crowds behind. And at that point, the canyon is a real gem.
Thoroughly enjoyed the paddling. I, of course, wanted to go all the way to the climbing area and until the creek was too shallow to paddle, but my kiddos were ready to head back, so we turned around after a couple of miles.
I'll be back again to enjoy this one.
We drove back through Payson. Looking at the scarred landscape from the Bush fire was depressing. Among many others, Mt. Ord from Slate Creek will not be the same for a long time .... |
