Day trip up to Horton Creek with Dustin. We'd never been to area, found the trailhead just fine but had problems figuring out where the actual trail was. Ended up wandering around Big Canyon for a while, climbed over the ridge back to Tonto (found Tonto Falls ), then finally followed some other hikers onto Horton Creek Trail. It was about 11 by the time we were going up Horton, and some dark clouds rolled in overhead, and there was a constant rumbling of thunder. After a bit it started sprinkling, so we dawned rain jackets, while most people on the trail seemed to be bailing. The rest of the hike it never really got any heavier than a light rain, so we enjoyed ourselves without much of any crowds. With the overcast weather, it was a great day for photography as well. Made it about 2 miles in before we decided to head back. Definitely want to come back and go all the way to the spring. The icing on the cake was a delicious lunch at Buffalo Bar & Grill in Payson before heading back to the Valley.
