| no partners | | ELEPHANT MOUNTAIN - LIMESTONE SPRING LOOP HIKE 9.1 miles 2,141 AEG. This is a nice variation on this hike. Very pleasant day. Watched a the moon-set over the mountain. Out on Tortuga to the Elephant Mountain trail then up to the Saddle. Back down then out onto Tonto Natl Forest (TNF) and across on the Page Springs Trail to the Spur Cross trail. In on Spur Cross. I did not go all the way out to the end of Elephant Mountain Trail because I did not know what to expect on the Page Spring trail. The Page Spring stretch is a roller coaster - lots of up & down in & out of the drainages. A couple of times I had to look for the trail, but it is well cairned.
Cave Creek was running, water at the pump and water at the spring today. Cave Creek dries up in the summer. Don't know about the pump or the spring in summer.
In the last 6 months they have added steps between the Tortuga trail and the wash. It's sort of funny that they have a sign saying it's a "primitive unmaintained trail" and then they add steps. What a joke!  Get out on this trail while it still has some character. I hope they don't add rails, benches & a Starbucks and make this a Piestewa Peak situation. especially if they keep that Primitive trail sign up. So I guess I'm getting some extra exercise jumping on my soapbox  |
