There was an organized tour led by an interpretive ranger in the actual Lady Bird Johnson grove when I passed through. Some really big trees there.
Speaking of interpretive rangers, these parts seem to have some good ones. I went to 3 campfire programs during my trip (Wed. 8/27 at Albee Campground in Humboldt Redwoods State park, then Thurs. 8/28 to Monday 9/1 at Elk Prairie Campground in Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park), and they were all good. The first one was about the Pacific banana slug and other invertebrates of the redwood forest, the second about the Alerce tree (a southern hemisphere tree that resembles redwoods and lives in similar habitat) and its namesake preserve in Chile, and the third about the role of fire in the redwood community. Fun for all ages. |
