| partners | | john had a loop for us to dayhike
up the JMT from rae lakes, past arrowhead and dollar lake, cutting off trail south-southwest up a creek, a ridge and into sixty lakes basin
there is also a defined trail from the lower part of rae lakes into the basin
the two should connect, right?
no one downloaded the track john had in route manager, so we were going off the map from denny's sierra hiking book
most maps only show the defined trail from rae lakes
overshot where we should leave the JMT, backtracked and started up the right side of a creek and onto a ridgeline
the off trail was fine, we just had to get high enough to see that we were heading in the right direction
on the way up, the boys spotted a big horn ram
we topped out looking into sixty lakes basin
beautiful string of streams and lakes
you could spend the entire day right there
we followed the basin and began looking for where the defined trail might be
in comparing my track with the map, we didn't go far enough south, but thought we were too far south and backtracked
as it was getting late in the afternoon, we had to decide on a route
since the trail circled fin dome, we picked a line, climbing high enough to see it
then kept it to our left while taking the path of least resistance to the south
had just decided to climb up a cut in the fin ridgeline, when i spotted a trail below us
that was quite a relief, as none of us wanted to use our overnight survival skills
followed the defined trail (which actually went up the cut we were going to try) as it grew dark, got the headlamps out, and arrived at our campsite in full dark
would love to take the defined trail first and see how far it went and then do the off trail portion back to the JMT
sixty lakes basin is well worth the side trip - gorgeous back country
the JMT portion is also very scenic, and we were in tibber mode for awhile
will add a blurry pic of the loop map, along with this link to the lower part of the route
