| no partners | | I headed out to hike up to Rockinstraw Mountain, but did not want to drive all the way out there for just a 5 mile hike. So on the way I stopped off near Superior to hike up to Peak 5630.
Peak 5630
I drove on a paved road to an SRP substation and parked. Past this point is a rough dirt road, but a high clearance 4WD stock vehicle could make the drive to where I veered off the road and started hiking off-trail.
I hiked about 0.8 miles on the dirt road, and then went off-trail to the peak. I first went up to a ridgeline where Peak 5630 came into view. I dropped a bit into a basin and then angled up to a saddle just below the peak.
The hike was entirely a class 1 walk. The off-trail was a bit brushy, but wasn't bad. There was a lot of ankle-busting rock on the off-trail portion though. It seemed like every step was an accident waiting to happen, so I took it slow and was looking down at my feet most of the time.
There were some really nice views at the summit, and I was glad that I did this hike.
Rockinstraw
I did this hike from the west side of Rockinstraw. I parked at the junction of FR 219 and an unmarked forest road. The unmarked road has some iffy spots that would no doubt stop a stock 4WD vehicle, so I just walked the road. It was an easy walk and the scenery was nice, so I did not mind the walk, especially since the hike is so short anyway.
It was a fairly easy off-trail to the Rockinstraw summit -- the mountain is visible the whole way which simplifies route finding. There are a couple of cliff bands to deal with, but each band has an obvious weakness so it was not difficult to negotiate it.
At the summit I located 3 flivers: the "Rockinstraw" benchmark and 2 reference marks. I took @FLYING_FLIVER 's work for it that the "Rock" benchmark was buried underneath the summit cairn.
Previous triplogs have documented that there was a large cross just south of the summit. However, the cross is no longer there and I could not see any signs that there ever was a cross.
This was a quality hike to the summit, which has some great views. I like this area and I am glad that I made the trip out there to bag this peak.
Synopsis
Both peaks have nice views, but Rockinstraw is a much more enjoyable hike.
Distance and elevation gain for the 2 hikes are below. Stats above are the sum of the two.
Peak 5630: 3.73 miles with 1,337 feet of AEG
Rockinstraw: 5.06 miles with 1,314 feet of AEG |
