My first hike after sacrificing a portion of my lower lip to the sun gods. Who knew you had to put sun screen on your lips! It's amazing what surgeons can do these days. After fearing that I would lose a sizeable portion of my lip and be disfigured, it's hard to tell I had major surgery just under three weeks ago.

This hike is not your typical route to Massacre Falls. Besides the Treasure Loop trail I started and finished on, it's the only recognizable named area on the route so that's what I'm calling it. Besides, I did visit the top of the falls.

My last hike was in this same general area. I wanted to continue up a canyon above Horseshoe Falls. Rick Vincent gave me a couple of tips in my previous trip log and I've been anxious to go back since then. I started the hike from Lost Dutchman, followed the use trail past the Praying Hand over to the fins, then dropped down into the drainage near Horseshoe Falls. From there I followed a nicely marked trail up the canyon until I reached a fork. I took a left at the fork and followed the drainage up a steep hill until it intersected with the Reverse Flatiron route. I found a flat spot with a nice rock to sit on near this intersection and took a break before continuing.

When I planned this hike, I wasn't sure how I would do after convalescing at home for 2+ weeks, so I planned something ambitious but gave myself an out if I needed it. I needed it. My ambitious plan was to hit Peak 5024, drop down to the Flatiron, head over to the ridgeline trail for some amazing canyon views, then loop off trail back to the Reverse Flatiron exit point and return via Massacre Falls. As I sat on my rock looking up the steep incline towards the top, I knew I didn't have the legs for it today. This was my go, no go point so I headed down instead.

With the extra time, I decided to explore the area above Massacre Falls before returning on a cairned route along the eastern slopes of the mountain back to Lost Dutchman.

It was great to be out on an absolutely gorgeous day in Paradise!
