| no partners | | I haven’t posted in a while, but wanted to share this as I know there are a lot of Supes and wildlife lovers on this site.
So… it’s 4:15 PM and I am taking my last break on the Peralta trail before heading to the TH before it gets dark. I am eating my Kind bar and taking in the soft lighting on the Needle when I hear some rustling on the rocks up the canyon directly behind me. The trail doesn’t go that way, but perhaps it is a hiker returning to the trail from an off-trail excursion. Hearing it again I look up and catch a glance of a dark color moving through the vegetation, but couldn’t identify it as a hiker or animal. As it continues to get closer it’s getting late so I decide to pack up, get out my camera, and see what shows up – hiker or animal. When it’s about 30 yards out or so I can hear that it’s multiple animals. They are vocalizing, but not a sound I am familiar with. ??? I am standing with the camera at the ready when the first visual appears – two periscoping tails (could only see the tails) rising above the brush! Coatis!!! For the next 10 minutes they (perhaps a dozen of them) would pass through 10 yards to my left as I take several pics. What an amazing wildlife encounter with a band of coatimundis that for the most part had no idea I was there! I love the Supes!!!! : ) |
