I've heard talk of a spring off Peralta trail but since I'm mostly a day hiker I usually carry what I need and plan my exit accordingly, so I never really looked for it. Recently there was thread about Pinyon Camp stating that there was no reliable water nearby. Tom Kollenborn posted a photo of Piper Spring on facebook this week and that's all I needed get me out there. The Superstition Hiker's guide mentioned the spring but said the spring box was full of rocks and there was no water. The HAZ Spring map shows no spring in the area. Denny showed me the famous "WATER" rock a few years ago but didn't know where the spring was. Yesterday I had good intentions but faulty info so today after doing some homework I was off again. I didn't want to repeat the hike so I decided on a Dutchman trail to Old Peralta trail to Peralta trail approach. The Dutchman trail was easy but Old Peralta is tricky in spots. The solution is to look up and when you see that huge needle ahead you're going the right way. On the return trip look to Deadwoman Butte for guidance. After a short hike up Peralta trail I was at Piper Camp. I found the "WATER"rock and in about 2 minutes saw the spring which is full of water. Piper camp is nice but there is no shade like Pinyon camp. I would do a spring report but it doesn't exist.
