What a great hike! Although I only ventured in three miles, this one has everything that I look for in a hike - easy access (reasonable drive from Phoenix and the access road to trailhead off of 87 is in great shape and only a few miles), great scenery (geology of the area is amazing, recent fire damage sad but interesting to see area recover), good workout but not painful (1200 ft gain, but not strenuous), payoff at the end (frozen waterfall, view of the canyon), and a soundtrack (rushing water from stream below fills the air).

On this Monday afternoon I was the only one out on the trail. A bit cool in the shade as I climbed higher, but nothing that a shot of sun didn't cure - and there was plenty of that on this day. Make sure you take a walk down to the stream, which at one point is very close to the trail. Also, beware that trail 42 also starts from this point, but 43 is the one you want for this hike (behind the wooden trailhead sign). Can't wait to get back and try this one again!
