First 20 miles is paved and the last nine is well-graded dirt/gravel that any vehicle could easily pass. From the East Valley, it took four hours to reach the trailhead - so plan accordingly. Many speed limit reductions as you pass through small towns on highways 60 & 70.
Now about the hike - beautiful trail and area. I love hiking next to water, and you see/cross or hear Ash Creek for large portions of the hike. Enjoyed the waterfall, but equally enjoyed all the lizards you find on the rocks near the falls - most were bold little buggers letting me get near to take their picture. Most I have ever seen in one area. You do have to go off trail a bit to get a good view of the waterfall, but only a hundred yards or so. Surprised to only see three other groups of hikers here on a Saturday - but I guess the long drive scares many away. Next time I would spend the night to avoid making the long there and back drive. After a great day hiking - lucking out with the weather, on my return trip I stopped at the casino in Globe to stretch my legs and lucked out again - won $1000! / |
