| no partners | | Was hoping to go all Holy Joe on the day, but apparently I was up too early to read clearly or the streamflow site was incorrectly reporting the flow in the 100 cfs range. Not sure, but when I got there, it didn't look good. I put on my gear, grabbed my poles and ventured out into the creek. It wasn't gonna happen. At thigh deep, I couldn't stand unassisted and my poles were vibrating like violin strings. And I wasn't even a quarter of the way into it!
I turned around and headed back to the truck to figure out plan b.
The highway bridge across the creek is being rebuilt, and the flood had destroyed all the temporary flood structures built for construction. Two sheriffs vehicles were on hand, but traffic continued to cross the bridge. Not sure what the construction rating for flow is, but it looked a little scary to me!
Turns out the rain makes for some good exploring and nice scenery.
*I should note that 700cfs is hardly a big flood for Aravaipa. It hits 2000 about once a year, and 10,000 once every 10 years. In 1983 it hit 30,000cfs. Normal flow is 10-20cfs though, so 700 is still a nice flood event. |

Heavy flow |
| | Flooding at 700cfs. Damaged/breeched flood control structures built to divert flow during bridge construction over the creek. | | _____________________
