About a year ago Jack and I were discussing some hikes we might do. He said he wanted to get up to the Flatiron again and I mentioned going to the cliff dwelling in Rogers Canyon. Well, time was slipping by for this season, so I asked if there was still a chance to head to Rogers Trough before the trip back to Minnesota. It was short notice but we set it up for Tuesday. :D

The drive to the trailhead was quite the adventure with the road work being done (much needed). In spite of it being a rather rough 13 miles from the Queen Creek crossing to Rogers Trough, it has always been a fun drive in my opinion, especially on the return with the terrific views that unfold as you descend. :)

Though the cliff dwelling is interesting to see, for me the highlight is always the hike down to it. A nice trail in a beautiful canyon, meandering along a streambed with lush vegetation and plenty of shade much of the way. After you pass the junction it gets even better as you get deeper in the canyon under towering cliffs and interesting rock formations in the squeeze near the ruins. Then shortly after that if you keep going, it opens up again at Angel Basin. It's a great hike (and not too steep). :)

We took our major break at the cliff dwelling. I just mostly relaxed in a shady spot and had lunch while Jack headed up to check it all out. I am sure glad he was able to climb up and see that inner structure. I don't trust myself going up there anymore, rope or not. (I don't need to climb up there again anyway; the place is being loved to death enough as it is ;) )

Once Jack got back down from exploring he broke out Pat's super cookies, and those along with our celebratory beer, had me "back to normal" for the hike out. :y:

Turned out to be a long day, but then again it is a fairly involved operation getting there. We were amazed at how many cars were at Rogers Trough for a weekday, and we had some interesting conversations with people we encountered along the way.
