Six of us decided to continue our exploration of the Devils Canyon area on our Thursday hike. John fired up the power wagon so we could get to the trail-head east of the windmill without walking that last mile over the ridge.
Reaching the waterfall on Hackberry Creek we made it down on the left side of the fall, however one of our group found a route to the left of the fall and descended down the chute without the risk of slipping off the ledge or getting wet. On the way back we used this route and were impressed.
The route down stream in Hackberry is a boulder hop, slow and scenic . A large pool blocks your advance at the confluence with Devils Canyon and we found we had to go high on the left and then down to the junction.
Devils canyon is a stream bed hike with some boulder hopping and side hill climbs to avoid walls and thick vegetation. As reported on other posts generally stay right going downstream and follow a faint path if you can find it. The only time we strayed left was to cut across left bends in the canyon. We went around right side walls by climbing above them to the right. By doing that we came across the “tool box” reported in other posts and found a few cairns that told us we were generally on the right track.
About the time we were thinking it was time to abandon this hike and start heading for "beer" we came to our destination, the top of the first pool. A short climb to the right for me, a few photos around the top of the pool and it was back up the canyon. We found three “young guys” rock climbing at the water fall in Hackberry and after wishing them well we slogged along to the truck, six tired old dogs.
