It was uncomfortable from the start to the summit, and that lethal type of temperature on the last few miles at the bottom. I assume my thermometer was accurate at 112, but who cares, it was hot. I decided to hike this today, when I had previously written it off, since I woke up at 5:15 and thought it was doable with the early start. I started at 8. Still, I didn't want to drive 100 miles to Mount Lemmon or Mount Wrightson. Lemmon would probably have been smarter. Even Wrightson might be hot at Madera Canyon, right now.
Cicadas are out in full force, providing an enjoyable background soundtrack. I was surprised to see so many hummingbirds. I disturbed one on the summit when I arrived, and I saw many others while going up and down. That was interesting, but seeing a Coatimundi, literally in the shade of a shrub off the side of the trail, was the true highlight. Had I not done this today in this insane heat, I never would have seen it. I disturbed it as I was about to pass, and it made it's way up slope to get away from me. I took a lousy pic, which could have been great when it was looking at me 1 to 2 seconds before. It was in the last part of the upper canyon section, just before you level off in the initial stretch with ponderosa pines. |
