| partners | | This was the only hike of our little Spring Break Show Low trip that I was truly looking forward to. Thursday & Friday was just me and my two kids, but my husband joined us for the weekend. Billings Gap is supposed to be a 3 mile loop, but as soon as I realized he was joining us, I knew we wouldn't be making the entire loop. Especially since he didn't bring a coat and it was 47 degrees with 30mph winds. We parked at the 4th pullout along Blue Mesa Road, found the faint trail heading east from the pullout, and started walking. It was windy, but not bad. The views were great. The trail is faint at times, but as long as you follow the perimeter of the mesa you are on, you will complete the loop without any problems. We only went a little over half a mile before the 49 yr old started whining, the 5 & 6 year olds were still having fun, but we turned around and headed back to the car.
I am hoping to return to the Petrified Forest maybe next month to complete this hike. After reviewing some of the other "Off the Beaten Path Hikes" on the Petrified Forest webpage, I found that I could combine this Billings Gap Overlook trail with the Historic Blue Forest Trail, throw in the touristy 1 mile Blue Mesa Loop trail, and turn it into a 7-8 mile hike--with very little interaction with any other sightseers. |
