| no partners | | From Day 8 of my Ouray Trip...2nd Day after my Hand blew up, so no Canyon on this Day either...But that was Fine, there was another Area I wanted to see. Yankee Boy Basin is known for it's Wildflowers this Time of Year...
My Original Goal was to go all the way up to Blue Lakes Pass...Yeah well, it's always nice to have a Goal...
The Addition of the Wildflowers to the already Terrible Scenery was just not going to allow that to happen... I had a Time Limit as well, as the Rendezvous Dinner was early that Evening...It was also Interesting at the Time, I was really having Trouble with the Elevation and it surprised me, since I had been Hiking up Canyon Approaches all Week...On this Day, I was Seriously Sucking Wind and the Legs felt like there was no Oxygen there at all... After the Hike was over, it finally Dawned on me as I was Driving back DOWN to Ouray...The Highest Elevation Canyon Approach I did, topped out at around 9700 Feet...I started this Hike at 10,700... This has Officially become the Highest Elevation I have ever Hiked...I topped out after the Lake at 12,300...If I hadn't been Running Out of Time, I probably would have gone for the Pass....
After Checking out Governor's Basin a little bit, I found a small Spot to Park, at the "Y" between the 2 Basins...Wasn't all that excited about a Road Walk, but whatever...Sometimes they get me where I want to go...I had a lot of Jeeps and ATVs pass me, but that was ok...They all Enjoyed the Scenery for a couple of Hours...I pretty much Immersed myself in it for a Half a Day... Took a bunch of little Side Trips exploring a little bit and finding some little Trails around. And was constantly Photographing the Wildflowers...Took a little Time too, to stalk the Local Wildlife...I had a First on this Trip and although it was small, it was still Pretty Cool...
I ended up doing a Figure 8 of sorts...Up the Road, past the Lower TH for Sneffels and Blue Lakes and then after a bit more UP, a Trail takes off to go to the Lake and beyond, to the Pass...Took the Trail, hit the Lake and then took the Road back down. After about 200 Yards, I veered Off the Road the other way to a Trail I found and followed it. It turned into a Road for a bit, then back to a Trail, passing the Dispersed Camping Areas around the Lower TH...Back on the Original Road and Down to the Escape...
Ran into a Father and his Mid Teens Daughter at the Lower TH who were just leaving for Sneffels on Foot...They asked me if they were going the Right Way... At 5:00, it seemed a bit late to me, but they said they were going up to do a Sunset Summit...
Got back into Town just in Time for the Dinner and Raffle...I guess I missed out, not coming down Earlier...Another Gal that was up that way, got Photos of a Mama Bear and her 3 Yearling Cubs near the Weehawken TH, a couple of Hours earlier...
Great Hike...Great Day...And you'll be able to tell Instantly that I got sick of Culling Photos... |
