I was supposed to leave on Tuesday the 15th, for Utah, to attend the Zion Canyoneering Rendezvous. Frye Canyon got Cancelled on the 8th due to High Water, and they Scheduled it for the Following Tuesday... Since I've been wanting to do that Canyon for so long and the Rendezvous didn't really Officially Start until Wednesday Evening, I set back my Departure by a Day... By the Time I got back Home from Frye Canyon at 10:00 that Night, I knew I had really Injured something. It hurt to even Move...I was pretty pissed and the Timing was Terrible...But...I'm Stubborn...And I had already put out enough Money to Attend the Rendezvous that Cancelling was not an Option, at least for me... So I fell out of Bed the next Morning, painfully finished Packing the Escape and was on the Road by Wednesday Afternoon...
Day 1: Travel from Home to the Ponderosa Ranch Resort outside of Zion National Park in Utah....By the Time I got there, I was more than Painfully Exhausted and knew that I would not be doing much the Next Day. I checked in and did not sign up for a Canyon on Thursday. I had Signed up a few Weeks ago to do Pine Creek and Keyhole on Friday and being an Optimist and hoping against Hope that maybe my Ribs were just Bruised, I did not Cancel my Friday Plans. They were in Danger of being Cancelled for another Reason however. When I arrived on Wednesday Night, Pine Creek and Keyhole were still Closed, due to 7 Canyoneers Perishing in a Flash Flood in Keyhole on Monday...There was no Date for Reopening as they were still Searching for some of the Missing...Such an Incredibly Sad Event...
I hit the Campsite that I would be sharing with 2 of the Friends that I had done the Rim Canyons with last Weekend. I threw my Stuff out of the Escape and hit the Sack.
Day 2:I did next to Nothing. Way too Sore...Slept half the Day away and finished Setting up Camp. I thought maybe things would be better if I wrapped my Ribcage with an Ace Bandage. Stacie helped me and it did seem to feel Better.
Day 3: Pine Creek and Keyhole had both Opened that Morning as they had Recovered the last Missing Person Thursday Afternoon....Stacie wrapped me up again like a Burrito and then we went and did Keyhole which is very very Short and Easy...(Separate Triplog)
Day 4: Since Canyons were now a Certain No-Go, I attended an Advanced Canyoneering Workshop. Some of it I couldn't do, like Ascending the Rope and Knot Passing because it hurt too much, but I was able to do the Rest, including just straight Rappelling with my new Critter Device. I also Rappelled using only a Carabiner, which was pretty Sweet and very Good to know...For some Reason Rappelling isn't very Bothersome, it's just Everything else... It was a Great Workshop and I'm glad I went.
Day 5: Last Day of the Rendezvous...Some People did Canyons while others just had Breakfast and hit the Road for Home... I hung around Camp for awhile and then just Explored the Vast Property of the Ponderosa with some Birding in Mind. I didn't feel like going into Zion on a Weekend Day...Too Crowded...The Birds were not very Cooperative on this Trip. I did see several Rafters of Wild Turkeys, but it was the Day we were on our Way to do a Canyon, so no Photos of them....
Day 6: Wanted to Spend this Day in Zion, even if I couldn't Hike much...I did Hike a little, so I'll do a Separate Log and Photoset for this Day....
Day 7:Time to go Home. But I would take a big Side Trip on the Way. I did a little Hiking there as well so I'll Separate it too. I'm glad I did it. I've never seen it and was Tired of Passing it on the Way to Utah....
In Spite of the Ribs and not being able to do what I had Originally Planned, it was still a Good Trip. Met some New Friends and Visited with some Old Ones including Joel (Norb) whom I hadn't seen since before his Accident. It was Good to Catch up with Him...
So these Photos Encompass just the Driving To and From and also a little of the Down Time In-Between...Everything Else will go on a Hike or a Canyon Day.... |
