When we got to Flagstaff, it was pretty clear out. But in the time it took us to grab a coffee and some water at a gas station, clouds were hiding the peaks (not even kidding).
We continued to the trailhead, parked, and started up the mountain. We could see the clouds were rolling off the mountain really fast as we walked through the meadow.
We cruised up the mountain, only stopping twice for less than 2-3 minutes each time. As we approached the saddle we started asking people coming down if they had made it to the summit. Everyone was saying it was too windy past the saddle, and that they had turned around.
We gained the saddle and were immediately pounded with fast moving gusts of wind and very low visibility. We debated on whether to continue and decided that we would wait 30 minutes to see how the weather developed, so we took shelter behind an outcropping of rocks against the wind.
After waiting, with no change in the weather, and after seeing every group turn around at the saddle, we decided to turn around. You can't win them all, I guess.
I'm hoping I can summit her one more time before she gets snow. Maybe next weekend. |
