| partners | | Five hikers and two dogs-- we had a great group for this one. The original plan was to do Humphreys via Inner Basin and then go off-trail and hit Abineau and Rees for some nice color viewing. We all met Thursday night to car camp and get an early start friday.
This is always a fantastic hike. The Aspens were beginning to turn so we had a good mix of greens and yellows. We took our time and headed towards the summit. We made it to the summit trail junction and Rincon was looking a bit tired. After a few more steps, Scott decided not to push him any further and head back down to the saddle. I told him I would summit and then come back down and hike back with them the way we came. The dogs could give each other encouragement-- really though, I was getting tired and beginning to dread the off-trail portion. The altitude was not treating me well. Lily and I hit the summit and took a long break with the rest of the crew. Chumley and Adam decided to go on with the original plan and Sam opted to hike back down with me, Scott, and the dogs. We had a really nice hike back and Rincon recovered nicely after his nice long break at the saddle. According to Chumley, we had made the right choice not attempting to take the dogs on that route-- it was unexpectedly challenging. Lily was a bit tender this morning, too, so I'm glad I didn't drag her on anything bigger than our already big day.
We celebrated after with beer and pizza in Flagstaff at Mother Road. I had a really great time and it was fantastic to meet a couple new hikers |
