Halloween in the Mazzies! :y:

This was my first trip into the Mazatzals and it most definitely will not be my last.

We left the valley around 11:00 am and reached the trailhead around 12:30 pm. I didn't expect any solitude along the trail once we saw how many vehicles were parked at the trailhead, but I would be pleasantly surprised by the end of the trip.

We started up Barnhardt and enjoyed the easy grade as we entered the canyon. Immediately upon entering the canyon, I could hear water running at the bottom and it got my hopes up that maybe there was something going on up the falls that wasn't just a trickle. (Spoiler: Nope.)

The climb up through the canyon is absolutely spectacular and surpassed my expectations. Its interesting to observe what I can only describe as "micro-environments" within the canyon. It felt as though we were passing through multiple season as we ascended. Spring in the cool moist corners, summer on the exposed ledges, and fall in the high drainages. We encountered a total of 5 people coming down the canyon.

At that saddle, we enjoyed the views of Payson, the Rim, and the rugged peaks at either side.

Past the saddle the trail gets a little brushy, but its still fairly easy to follow. You'll want pants for anything past the saddle. As we made our way back into the Mazzies, the fall foliage along the peaks became more vibrant. We lost the trail once, but found it obscured behind some conveniently placed manzanita bushes. Besides the feeling that you're finally made it into Mazzies, this section of the trail is rather uneventful.

We merged with the AZT and the views started to pick up again. We headed towards Chilson Camp and passed the last person we would see the entire trip, a single hiker making his way back from the camp. The trail got a little overgrown and faint at times from here.

Eventually we turned around and found a nice camping spot near the Barnhardt/AZT junction. We enjoyed a small fire, some talk radio, and the stars. We could see lights through a small notch in the mountains out south west. If I'm not completely useless with a compass, I believe this was the valley (maybe Scottsdale).

After enjoying some dinner, we crawled into our sleeping bags and drifted to sleep. Around 3:00 am I woke up wishing I had put on my long johns. I tightened up the quilt and eventually got warm enough to fall back to sleep.

Around 7:00 am, we got up and broke camp. After a quick breakfast, we hit the trail and were back at the trailhead around 10:30 am. Not a single soul to be seen along the trail.

What a wonderful place! :y: I can't wait to come back for some more of the Mazzies. :D

The peaks are turning yellow. Small sections of the trail which cross drainage also have fall colors.
