| partners | | Bruce dragged me out kicking and screaming to one of my favorites. We started at the low point to keep the coldest morning temps as warm as possible. The forecast was 70% chance of heavy thunderstorms. 55 was the warmest I recall starting a mid October hike on Mingus and the storms looked spotty on radar!
Covered 3mi on #105 quick, which is a nice forest. Light rain throughout #105A and onto #106. Both of these trails offer views overlooking Cottonwood to the east and the Verde Valley down SE. The nicest views are NE of the red rock on the edge of the Secret Mountain Wilderness with Humphreys in the background.
Upon arriving to the Autumn showcase on the SW end of #106 fog raced up canyon and obscured all views. Fear not, we got a couple nice views when it drifted out. Autumn is historically around Oct 10th for this area. It's either not hitting much or very late. October was a little warm this year so it's par for course.
Coleman Trail #108 and all the trails for that matter seem to have recent maintenance. #108 was very overgrown years ago. This was the second hike we've noticed it trimmed back.
Gaddes Canyon Two Trail #9037 never disappoints. Perhaps the weather gods had a little heart and gave us the nicest weather of the day!
We headed up to the hang glider lunch pad to launch food into our starving bellies. Sesame seed sized hail and rain picked up so we hurried to get moving and stay warm. The mother of all flashes lit up the sky followed by a get the hell off the mountain cracking of thunder.
Despite umbrellas we had nice tree coverage to block the wind and rain during the brunt of the storm. I noted a tiny puddle forming next to us. Ten minutes later we crossed the Delaware and hop scotched around the flow.
Pleasant hike back and overall a nice day!

Autumn Foliage Observation Moderate I'm being generous with the moderate rating. This was least foliage I've witnessed in the area. |
