| no partners | | I looked at the map and picked a "hump" near the Gila River. I had no information at all about what I might find there but my recent experience is that there was so much ancient habitation along the river I was bound to find something worth looking at.
I pulled off the narrow dirt road a mile or two short of the hump so I could walk the open desert. There were pottery pieces all over the place! Pretty impressive since there was no sign of a ruin...just pottery "everywhere". This confirmed my thoughts about the population along the river and that everywhere is worth looking.
I spent quite a while examining pottery pieces as I moved along. Although almost all of it was plain brown there were a lot of big sherds and edge pieces.
The desert at the foot of the hump was lush with a lot of nice sites with boulders and clearings but I didn't see direct habitation signs there. I did see a desert tortoise though, first one for me! As a "ground looker" when I walk I found him in the usual way - by almost stepping on him.
I walked the ridgeline and saw a couple more clearings up high but just one faded glyph near the top. Coming down the other side of the ridge though I did find a large petroglyph area at the bottom. They were mainly faded and a little sloppy but there were plenty to look at.
I had planned to hit another nearby bump but I'd seen enough for one day and I had things to do at home - so an easy day. |
