| no partners | | I was looking for a short hike close to home, that we could get done before the day got too hot. I saw these two trailheads, and saw the distance between them was only 2.6 miles, and I thought - I can do that!
My son-in-law asked to join me, so with my dear wife as "Trail Angel Extraordinaire" we left Mesa shortly after 5 am.
She dropped us off at the Florence Kelvin Trailhead, and drove down to the Gila River Trailhead, and hiked back up to meet us.
WARNING!!! Near the start, about 2/10ths of a mile from the highway, the trail makes a sharp right around a saguaro - it was filled with wasps! My son-in-law and I both got stung 4-5 times; he tripped trying to get away, and scraped his knee and palm. [I always knew those hiking poles were good for something! ] Thank the Lord, neither of us are anna... anipha... are sensitive to wasp stings. Five hours later, and those suckers still hurt!
"Other than that, Mrs. Lincoln, how was the play?"
Seriously, the remainder of the hike was great! The trail was a bit faint in spots, but, overall, the trail stewards have done an excellent job in creating and maintaining the trail.
My "Trail Angel Extraordinaire" hiked in 1.2 miles (climbing a 175' hill in the process!) and met us, then we all walked to the Gila River Trailhead together.
[bragging mode on] She's getting to be quite the hiker. In mid-August, we hiked around Flagstaff, and one day she hike 5+ miles! So I bought her some "real" hiking boots, and a GPS. Now, I just have to teach her how to use it! [bragging mode off]
Overall, a great day to be on the AZT! Thanks, Dale! |
