First point: just after crossing the bridge at Gillespie Dam I see that Enterprise Road, the one that would give east side access to the range, is posted as private, no trespassing.
I continued north along old US80, west of the Gila River and some lush looking agricultural fields, and noticed the dark boulders and cliff bands along the west side of the road. I'm thinking there are probably plenty of petroglyphs along here. At some point I glance to the side and, amazingly, saw petroglyphs. So I pulled off and walked around a bit and took some pictures. On the last outcrop I visited I saw a bobcat tiptoeing away - slow enough to get a good look but not a picture.
I continued along and found the dirt road coming from the north toward Woolsey Peak is pretty good (for high clearance). I walked a loop over some of the bumps - no signs of any people (ancient or modern) in the Wilderness area here - very clean, very nice. |
