I had visited this bench five days ago but did not have enough time to more thoroughly explore this area for Indian ruins and had not found any - just some petroglyphs and some random pot sherds. This time I took a different route up to the bench through an area that looked like it could be productive for Indian ruins but found no sign of habitation until I got to the top of the bench. There I focused on several high spots on the bench and found three small ruin sites with pottery sherds scattered nearby. The rock walls had all collapsed to the ground and weren't all that significant. Along the way I also found two boulders with petroglyphs, again not very significant.
I then decided to descend to Cline Creek and expand my previous unsuccessful search for Board Spring. On the way down the hillside I found the most significant ruin of the day on a small bench above the creek. It had approximately four rooms and a lot of pottery sherds scattered about. This time my spring search was successful finding it 0.1 miles down canyon from the location shown on topo maps. It had been developed with a water trough by early ranchers. The bottom of the galvanized steel trough had rusted through and two other damaged tanks had been discarded on the hillside. None of the scattered pipes carried water anymore. There was a shallow pool of water where the spring seeped out of the hill side at the base of a rock outcropping and water trickled down the hillside to the creek below where it was quickly absorbed into the sandy creek bed. I also found a partially buried rusty pipe leading 130 yds southwest from the spring to a location where I had found scattered boards on my 2/25/16 hike. From there it was back to the car on a route more or less following Cline Creek with a detour to explore to the end of an old 4x4 track. Another beautiful day in the Cline Creek area finding evidence of ancient Indian habitation and historical ranching activity. Didn't see another person or vehicle all day - very different from weekends when ATVs frequent this area. |
