| no partners | | Tried to get the three grandkids out hiking again. They've been on the Bootlegger Trail at MSPN several times without complaint because they love to climb on a granite rock formation on the side of the trail. A couple of trail stewards they encountered on their last trip told them and their mother that climbing on the granite rocks was forbidden. So this time the two younger ones refused to go hiking because "we can't climb on the rocks". Thanks a lot, trail stewards! But I do understand the concept of protecting the lichen growing on the rocks. The ten year old chimed in that she wanted to go so I gladly settled for one out of three. It was a chance to introduce her to the Tom's Thumb trail which would have been dangerous for the younger ones who insist on running all the time. So up the trail we went with the plan to turn around long before she reached the point of never wanting to go hiking with me again. Grace showed no signs of fatigue as I set a steady non-stop pace up the hill but she did mention once "Wow, my heart's really beating hard!" We stopped at a nice view point after going about 0.9 mile with an elevation gain of about 500 ft, enjoyed the views, took a few pictures and decided that was enough for her introduction to Tom's Thumb. That was a couple of days ago and Grace just told her Grandma that she wants to work up to going all the way up to Tom's Thumb. That's my girl. |
