This was the second hike of the first full day of our week long camping trip in the Sierra Ancha. After completing our first hike back at camp GH we got in Hanks new wheels and drove down FR 203 to where I had the location for a possible archaeology site. I wasn't sure what, if anything, we would find here. My source lists these under the category of "Other Locations" and could be just an artifact scatter, petroglyphs or hopefully a small ruin. We bushwhacked up and over a hill then down to a picturesque meadow on a hillside bench overlooking Cherry Creek. There we found an odd sign laying under a Juniper tree but could not make any sense out of the words roughly chiseled into the thick plank.

Then we proceeded down a ridge line from this meadow towards a cliff sided point that stuck out above Cherry Creek. This was the archaeology site location. Looking ahead through the zoomed in view finder of my camera I spotted some short sections of ruin walls at the site location - our first success at locating Indian ruins on this trip and another verification that my source for the locations of hundreds of archaeology sites in the Sierra Ancha is somewhat accurate. Once at the ruins we found only a few short sections of wall still standing to heights of 1 to 3 feet. It appeared to have been a small compound style ruin with an exterior wall surrounding 4 to 5 small dwellings. The rock walls of the dwellings had collapsed to the ground. We failed to locate any pottery sherds or other artifacts during our short visit at this site. On the hike back we spotted an old road bed which provided an easier path back to FR203. Based on fresh cattle and horse foot prints it appears this old road bed is used as a ranching access trail for rounding up cattle.

While driving back up the road to Camp GH, Hank got in touch with BeeBee on the Ham radio. Brian was camping with us for the weekend and we had expected to find him waiting for us in camp. But he had chosen to drive in from the south end of FR203 and had gotten delayed providing good samaritan assistance to a couple having truck problems. He would make it to camp a little late but in time for a GH prepared dinner.
