| no partners | | I just could not manage to stay inside on my day off. My intention was to be a "normal" person and just do regular day off errands for the day but with a clean house and everything done I just could not fight the itch to get outside! Seeking something close by my house Gavilan Peak fit the bill perfectly. Growing up in Flagstaff I've drove past this peak hundreds and hundreds of times, probably going on a thousand I'm sure here soon. Anyway ever since I was a child I can distinctly remember wanting to climb this mountain everytime my family and I drove by and throughout my life I have always admired with each drive by but just never made the trip to go climb it! Well today was finally the day and the conditions could not have been better, perfect weather and the whole peak all to myself!
Examined the few posted routes (Chums and Martinez) and decided to make a similar approach. The hike up to where you start scrambling was super quick, within 10min I found myself only a few thousand feet away from my parking spot but I was already a decent height up on the mountain precariously walking along an exposed ledge. I had some of the most fun I have ever had scrambling, once I hit the initial lowest peak I gazed upon what at first looked like a daunting ridge line traverse along with a very exposed scramble to the true summit but once I made the final push that was actually the most fun of the entire trip and I wanted that part to last longer!
Views, views and more views! Such an awesome 360° view on the summit and even a couple decent spots one could bivy down for the night. I wanted to stay up until the sunset because im sure it would have been spectaclular but since I was going down the southeastern wash I wanted to have some good light to watch my footing. I read in Chums post that there was no summit register so i brought one and placed it in the big stack of rocks, maybe now people will stop carving, etching and painting there names into the rocks of this beautiful peak.
Such a fun quick hike/climb with rewarding views and now I may just have to make it a routine to summit Galivan Peak each time I pass by! |
