With that being said I ended up taking a late spur of the moment trip out to Governors Peak. I am a person of plan and order and I had not even glanced at the route to GP prior to coming, usually before any trip big or small I always study the map, route and terrain for hours on end. First off I didn't make it to the TH until 3:30pm, I also figured since this place had a trail for the most part I really didn't even bother to pay much attention which was unusual for me, what I did not know was that there were multiple trails out there! I foolishly wandered on the Spring Valley Trail for a few miles and the whole time I was like just like why I'm the heck is this trail going back towards LP??? I knew Governor and Salvation were the complete opposite way! I even tried following distinct Burro trails back west to GP but after awhile realized I was going nowhere specific. Completely foolish of me but after re reading my screenshot of the triplog I realized I missed the Hermit trail junction. It was too late in the day to backtrack or make on off trail hike from there so I climbed to a little HP I'd like to dub "Burro Vista Viewpoint" basically due to the immense amounts of donkey feces and the great views it had of the area!
What I saw atop the vista blew my mind! It was truly like something out of a movie, "a hot day in the arid desert and the suddenly miles away he catches a glimpse of the beautiful oasis."
I knew there were springs out here but I figured that Castle Hot Springs and all the other private properties have closed them off so seeing this one surrounded by no residences just made me one eager hiker!
The oasis was even more spectacular than I imagined! I was greeted with running water, giant natural palm trees and a temperature nearly fifteen degrees cooler than the exposed desert.
Safe to say this place is a true desert oasis powered by some rather powerful natural springs, I assume it wouldn't usually have the running water like it currently does but due to our recent rain it made this place a real paradise! There was seperate section of the oasis located within 1/2 mile away from the main one, it was not as large but had a decent little spring of its own along with the remains of a nearby old homestead that I would have loved to live in!
The unexpected find created a nice little loop back to my SUV and I arrived just after the sunset. I will be back to bag Governor and Salvation now that I know exactly what I did wrong but all in all I was more than satisfied with the way yesterday turned out. |
