The 120-mile drive from Mexican Hat took just over 4 hours. Thankfully the last 35 miles (in the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area) was in much better condition than expected so we were able to average just over 15 mph. (The norm over the next five days would max out at only 5 mph!)

We arrived at our Sunset Pass campsite shortly after noon, wandering around the campsite just long enough to pick out the best spot for our tent. Expecting heavy overnight rains we chose a spot on a slight incline then took the time to cut a drainage trench around the tent. By 1:30 we had our camp all set so it's now time to get in a hike before the rain comes.

We began our descent into South Hatch Canyon along NP #730 in the Orange Cliffs Unit of Glen Canyon NRA, which became BLM #15000 upon crossing into BLM land. There was such a wide variety in the type of rocks and rock formations that we would encounter something new around every corner.

We could have kept going but by keeping a watchful eye on the darkening clouds we decided to circle back to camp, and set out on a longer loop in the morning. Earlier we had spotted a number of rock cairns off the road so we figured we'd check them out on the return trip. Although they seemed to lead roughly in the direction we were traveling, with nothing resembling a trail along the way we soon lost track so decided to ascend along the drainage back to camp.

Daylight Savings Time meant a late sunset so it wasn't long after we turned in that the heavy rains arrived... and continued until somewhere around 3 the next morning.
