ABC Anniversary Campout and Hike Weekend at Bear Canyon Lake camping.
This was the hike I planned to do with Wendy as the scheduled hike was for See Canyon. However, in light of the temps I wanted to stay on top so went to the map to see some options and selected this one from Bear Canyon to Rim Vista... except I thot for some reason it was only 4.5 miles from the Bear Canyon Lake Turnoff. However, it is 4 1/2 miles from the See Canyon junction to Carr Lake TH. It is another 2 3/4 miles to where the General Crook meets the 300 again. The group thought we would be doing about 10 miles (to and back). However if we had continued to my destination, it would have been only 8 3/4 give or take. Also lost in translation is a vehicle was staged at Woods Canyon Lake to take people back.

There is more to the story but let's get hiking. After gathering everyone up including two children, 14 of us we were off. During this hike, the route I had selected using Bruce's route was questioned off and on because of the way the General Crook line is on the map vs the route I had. And from Bear Canyon Lake road, the trail goes left and is not really a trail but a route. And even during this, a lot of folks questioned that I was taking them the right way. Part of the group stayed on the road and we retrieved them to come back to the route. However, we would have eventually met up with them at the See Canyon TH anyway. But I wanted to stay true to Bruce's route.

So we took the group pic at the See Canyon TH/Carr Lake 4.5 mile sign before continuing on the much easier route to follow. We were delightfully surprised at the nice terrain and beautiful scenery as it was definitely prime fern season. The group ended up splitting at several different points but the lead group would wait for us at intersections. I was filming of course so wandered from the front to the middle to the back but mostly in the middle. This was a family-friendly hike so we would have to wait up for the family from time to time. Their mom carried her girl on her shoulders for a lot of it. She is a personal trainer; it was impressive how she would lift her daughter to her shoulders. The son and one of the other hikers would explore together as the older hiker would share his knowledge along the way so that was nice.

I didn't read the description of the hike as initially it was just Wendy and me so we didn't realize the significance of the "V" stuff until we got done. We kept looking for two trees that formed a V  . Sometimes it took me a few moments to find the post with the "V" stuff. We didn't get out to Promnotory Point because ??? everyone kept going straight. The hike continues and is very nice as you head slightly down the rim. I thot we might be closer to the rim but we were not.

We enjoyed the meadows and weren't quite sure what to make of the Hole in the Ground. Anyway, we hooked up with some other trails in the area before coming out at the Carr Lake Loop TH. Two of the hikers headed down the road to hitch back to Bear Canyon Lake camping to bring some vehicles to retrieve the hikers. Wendy and I went around to the Drew Canyon TH area where there were campers to find someone to take us to get Rocky at Woods Canyon Lake. That took awhile as Wendy hooked the ride after a slight delay (they were moving their camp). Meanwhile the other two vehicles arrived to get most of the hikers. 3 of us stayed behind to wait for Wendy.

We had our lunch and then Wendy finally arrived back. We had thot of hiking back but it was just too late at this point. Two of the hikers, however, did hike back and made quite good time. So needless to say, we had a lot of time to kill before dinner. The temperature for the hike itself was pretty nice. After dinner I read the trip description about the General Crook trail and everyone seemed impressed by it. So thank you Bruce! Most everyone said they'd like to come back and do the trail again. I know I plan to. ... koqI ... 2-Xk ... HEss including ham radio tower set up

For me, sometimes it's just as much about the journey as the destination.
Oh, and once in awhile, don't forget to look back at the trail you've traveled.
