Washington Park to Geronimo TH Day Two of our AZT 27 weekend started out with pancakes made by Shawn and as usual they were yummy! And then we loaded up in TontoJr and headed to the edge of Washington Park community where we had left off in May of 2015.

This time we started at Mail Creek and headed west up several hills and down to creeks and drainages for almost 4 1/4 miles before we start the downhill portion. We would pass by Chase & North Sycamore Creeks before topping out around 10:25. This was interesting hiking thru the multi-terrain and scenery of the Highline Trail eventually coming thru a burn area, the outskirts of the Dude Fire:
6 firefighters were entrapped and killed in Walk Moore Canyon north of Payson, Arizona, June 23, 1990 — a day when the temperature in Phoenix reached 122 degrees, grounding jetliners because there was no reliable data confirming that fully loaded commercial aircraft could operate in that kind of heat.

Next was down to Bray Creek, past Cow Canyon, Poison Canyon and Spring, and then Bear and Geronimo Spring (very lush with growth). It was very ferny in areas, very pretty :) . Once we were on the flatter top areas I could see a nice stand of trees up toward the Rim that survived the fires WAY in the distance and beyond that a very cool rock outcropping (hoodoo like). Soon enough, we ended up below that area so that was kind of fun to get to a point you've been having your eye on; not knowing where you're going exactly. Above Bear Spring there was an interesting contraption for water delivery. As we made our way to Geronimo TH we walked over some rather fine drainage trail construction using nice flat natural paving stones.

As usual, Shawn made his regular observations and notes about the trail as to what's holding up and what's not :wrt: . For the most part, it seems in pretty good shape though there are a couple areas that need to be fixed up again; I'm sure that will always be the case with those portions of the trail. We made pretty good time today since there was little trail work we had to do. We made a couple stops to refuel but for the most part, other than stopping to admire our surroundings or check out a spring, we just kept hiking.

We picked up Shawn's truck, went back for Tonto Jr and then stopped at the Brush Pit to unload the truck before having a fine early dinner and a prickly pear margarita at El Rancho in Payson. I have only reviewed the pics so that I could do my trip log but I haven't even begun to edit them or put together the video for this part of our hike.

For me, sometimes it's just as much about the journey as the destination.
Oh, and once in awhile, don't forget to look back at the trail you've traveled.
