This is my 4th visit and I like it better each time. Reasonably short drive in, nice hike (listed at 5 miles but I make it closer to 6) with a bit of AEG and a taste of off-trail. Cooler than the low desert around town. Fabulous 360 degree views from the open 7000' summit. The off-trail part is easy to follow but a bit steep. The ample spoor of Cairn Builder Man makes route finding a breeze.
I found some information on the place name. A local rancher bestowed the name in the early 1900s after the catastrophic eruption of Mt. Pelee on the island of Martinique in 1902. There were several eruptions over a period of weeks with the most devastating occurring on May 8th. The entire town of Saint-Pierre was destroyed in one blast, taking 30,000 lives with only two known survivors from the town itself. The US launched a major relief effort and it was very big news at the time. |
