Beautiful conditions; 59F at the TH, tee-shirt and shorts the whole day (except for the summit). Trail is snow-free up to where it plunges into the dense tree cover below the Weatherford Trail intersection. More snow on Weatherford Trail until the trees thin out. The snow pack probably added 30 minutes of delay on each leg, but manageable. Saw a few couples hiking to the inner basin but only 3 hikers above that until the saddle. From there it was the usual crush of hikers coming up from Snow Bowl. Probably encountered something over two hundred before departing the saddle on the way back down. The summit was crazy with the crowds fighting the gnats. Everyone quickly covered up with whatever they had brought even though it was quite warm. Peals of indignation and disgust burst from mouths filled with gnats. Some summiteers attempted to drive away the plague with the burning of herbs. Not sure of their success but it seemed to improve their mood, replacing the indignation with laughter. I myself went with the 15 year old Bowmore. It did nothing to repel the gnats but did improve my spirits, as always. On the way back down the aspen glades rang out with the song of the Meadowlark and many others. An eery fluttering trill that descends in pitch, sounding something like a flute run through a synthesizer. Haunting and beautiful. Got back to the truck around 1730 and made it home after 2100. A long day and it fairly kicked my butt. Think I'll stick to weekdays for Humphreys in the future. |
