| no partners | | Almost did this as a backpack 2 weeks ago, decided on a day hike today instead. Started from the Pine TH where I crossed paths with a couple of dog walkers, that was the last human contact until Washington Park TH. Being fairly familiar with this area I flew through the first 9 miles as if on auto-pilot. Topped off my water supply at Webber before continuing on from Geronimo TH. Took a few small detours to check on Bear and Poison Springs. Highline was easy to follow through the burn area between Bray and N. Sycamore, although very little shade. There is some deadfall along this segment, not too bad. Worst of the deadfall was just before Chase Creek. Around East Branch of Chase Creek the Pine forest returned, making this an ideal camp area with plenty of water, shade & firewood. By the time I arrived at Washington Park I was feeling the effects of having hiked 20 miles on no more than a PB&J so I decided to stop and snack while topping of my water supply again. Headed up Colonel Devin and took the Tunnel Trail to the top of the Rim just as the sun disappeared behind the mountains. Knowing I was going to beat my ride back down at Washington Park TH, I continued on to General Springs to kill some time before making my way back down. All sections are free of snow. Just a few pockets on the North facing slopes near the Tunnel and some on top of the Rim. |
