| no partners | | This was part of a good day of four wheeling up in the San Juan Mountains near Silverton. The amount of traffic during the midday hours was almost unreal. So the tip is to go early or after about 3 in the afternoon to avoid the crowds. Also, the continued increase in traffic in recent years seems to be deteriorating the road conditions. Once you get off the famous Alpine Loop portions it isn't quite as bad, but you really have to be heads up! When I was last at Animas Forks in 2013 restoration work was being done on several buildings in the old ghost town, and the results are pretty impressive. In some ways it is amazing these old structures have lasted as long as they have, given the incredibly harsh winters the region experiences at this high elevation. The old timers knew how to build things!
