This short 16 mile drive has always been one of my favorites in New Mexico. Starts next to the Plaza Hotel on the Las Vegas Plaza and winds its way out past the hot springs at Montezuma, through the scenic Gallinas Valley, and ends in El Porvenir Canyon at the El Porvenir Campground. The first time I saw this place was on a road trip in Northern New Mexico with my Mom in September 1993. We stayed at the campground for a night. The fee was $8/night then, and still is. :) Back in 1993 there was an old fashioned hand pump to get water in camp. Later by about 2006 it had been upgraded to a more modern hand crank affair. I hadn't been there in several years, and now the campground water system has been shut down. This is a perfect place from which to stage a hike to Hermit's Peak, as the trail starts right next to the campground.

Since this is up in the Southern Rockies, the campground is subject to seasonal closures. In days gone by it shut down October 1st and reopened at the end of April. Those dates may not apply anymore, so check with Santa Fe National Forest if planning to camp there.

Note: Shortly beyond the small community of Gallinas the road forks, with the right fork being Highway 65 to El Porvenir. That is the way I always have gone in the past, but this time I decided to check out the left fork as well, which is FR 263. It stays along Gallinas Creek and is quite scenic as the canyon deepens and narrows. Not far after the fork there is another forest service campground (E.V. Long) that would be a good alternative if El Porvenir is full. Beyond that there are some fishing/day use picnic areas along Gallinas Creek. This road eventually ends near the Evergreen Valley Ranch.
