I ran into a man and his son up at the lookout who were long time visitors to the area, and were taking a look around just like me. We both were relieved by what we saw. He had been down by the apple trees and said there were apples, so that fired me up to go see! Everything looked pretty good, as the fire was managed through the area in a nice low intensity manner. The exception that I could see from the view from the tower was a pocket of more significantly burned pines in the vicinity of the snotel weather station not far from Peterson meadow. That would explain the 129 degree temperature spike noted one day in late May from the snotel data, as the fire was active. I really wanted to walk over there for a look after spending a brief time at the apple trees, but I had no hat or other rain protection and the rain was increasing somewhat, so I booked on back to the truck. Also, though there was no lightning, I had a feeling it might get started at any time and I didn't want to be out in that meadow if it did.
The places I have camped up there were unchanged and the Peterson meadow was wonderful as usual, with lots of elk sign and matted down patches where they have been lounging. How can you not like that place? So, feeling pretty darn happy with what I had seen up there, it was time to head back to civilization and drive over to Superior for food, gas, and roasted Hatch chiles. |
