The last one built in the Gulch from the Mayflower Mine to the mill down below featured steel towers. The Mayflower operation dates from around 1929 and holds the distinction of being the longest running mill in the history of the San Juan Mountains. The mill closed in 1991 and is now owned the San Juan County Historical Society. I did not drive all the way to the end of the road which terminates at the mine at an elevation of 11,200 feet. From the mine there is a 1.2 mile trail that climbs about 1000 feet up the basin headwall to Arrastra Basin and Silver Lake. The most extensive mining artifacts are up there. I was unable to do hiking this day, but it would be a great place to head back to and investigate someday. The photos I have seen are pretty amazing. There are older wooden tram towers visible as well, that were part of the system that carried ore from the mines around Silver Lake down the gulch to other mills. |
